Shockwave Therapy for lower back pain.
Shockwave Therapy is very effective for specific types of lower back pain, especially when the pain comes from soft-tissue problems rather than major structural spine damage. The types of back pain Shockwave Therapy can help with are;
1. Chronic myofascial pain;
-
Tight muscle bands and trigger points in the lower back
-
Often feels like deep aching or stiffness
2. Lumbar muscle strains (chronic phase);
-
Muscle injuries that didn’t heal fully
-
Ongoing soreness or weakness lasting months
3. Lower back facet joint pain;
-
Tight or irritated joint capsule
-
Pain with extension (arching backward) or rotation
-
Localised aching pain near the spine (often one side)
-
From prolonged sitting, sway-back posture, or repetitive extension
4. Tendinopathies around the spine;
-
Thoracolumbar fascia irritation
-
Erector spinae tendon pain
-
Iliolumbar ligament pain
5. Sacroiliac (SI) joint–related soft-tissue pain;
-
Pain where the spine meets the pelvis
-
Especially when ligaments and surrounding muscles are involved
-
(Not for true joint instability)
6. Scar tissue and postural overload pain;
-
Pain from old injuries or repetitive strain
-
Shockwaves can improve tissue elasticity and blood flow

What are the main causes of lower back pain?
Lower back pain is usually grouped into acute (short-term) and chronic (long-lasting) causes. Many people move from acute to chronic pain if the underlying issue doesn’t fully resolve.

Acute lower back pain (days to weeks)
Acute pain often starts suddenly and is commonly related to strain or injury.
1. Muscle or ligament strain (most common)
Lifting something heavy or awkward. Sudden twisting or bending. Sports injuries or falls.
2. Joint irritation
Facet joint “lock” or irritation. Pain with certain movements, especially extension or rotation
3. Disc-related irritation
Disc bulge or small herniation. May cause back pain with or without leg pain
4. Poor movement or posture overload
Prolonged sitting. Sudden increase in activity. Long periods of bending or standing
Chronic lower back pain (lasting >3 months)
Chronic pain usually involves ongoing tissue sensitivity, deconditioning, or repeated overload rather than one single injury.
1. Chronic muscle and fascial pain
Myofascial trigger points. Tight or poorly conditioned muscles. Reduced blood flow to tissues
2. Degenerative changes
Degenerative disc disease. Facet joint osteoarthritis. Age-related wear (not always painful, but can contribute)
3. Disc-related pain
Disc degeneration or recurrent disc irritation. Pain may flare with sitting or bending
4. Facet joint–mediated pain
Mechanical stress on facet joints. Often worse with standing, walking, or arching backward
5. Sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction
Pain near one or both sides of the pelvis. Common after pregnancy, trauma, or uneven loading
6. Postural and movement patterns
Weak core and hip muscles. Limited hip mobility causing spine overload. Poor load management over time

We can speed up your recovery from injury with a combination of Myofascial release, Radial and Focused Shockwave Therapy within the same sessions.
Depending on whether it is Acute or Chronic, 3 - 6 sessions are generally required for most people to gain complete pain relief and make a full recovery from most lower back complaints.

How Shockwave Therapy helps with lower back pain.
How it helps lower back pain
-
Improves blood flow
The sound waves stimulate new blood vessel formation. Better circulation brings oxygen and nutrients to damaged muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
-
Reduces chronic muscle tension
Helps relax tight muscles and trigger points in the lower back. This can relieve stiffness and improve movement.
-
Stimulates tissue repair
Encourages the body to restart a stalled healing process. This is particularly useful for long-standing (chronic) pain rather than recent injuries.
-
Interrupts pain signals
Temporarily alters how pain signals are transmitted to the brain. With repeated sessions, this can lead to longer-lasting pain relief.
-
Breaks down calcifications
If pain is related to small calcium deposits in soft tissue, shockwaves may help reduce them.
Shockwave therapy tends to help most with:
-
Chronic lower back pain (lasting >3 months)
-
Myofascial pain or muscle trigger points
-
Tendon or ligament-related pain around the spine

Take your recovery to the next level with scientifically proven Shockwave technology. Shockwave Therapy is clinically proven and well approved by top orthopedics and is now used by well established professional sports bodies, such as elite Premier League Football and Rugby Union clubs.
